Outer Banks Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Coalition

The Outer Banks Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Coalition is a group of committed and concerned citizens from the Outer Banks of North Carolina interested in the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists. The coalition was founded in January of 2013, after several collisions with pedestrians and bicyclists occurred across the Outer Banks. Its members stretch from Corolla to Hatteras including several town officials, many law enforcement officers from several towns, local citizens, and many business leaders from major employers throughout the Outer Banks.

The coalition has forged a strong relationship with NC Department of Transportation to bring components of the “Watch for Me.” Campaign here to the OBX in a pilot program of education and awareness. The Outer Banks Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Coalition has also worked closely with Dare County in creating a training and awareness videos used by many employee packets that are distributed in packets in the spring to local businesses interested in providing safety packets to seasonal and year round staff. The coalition also has a strong community presence at many events throughout the year distributing bicycle lights to promote safety at night, bicycle helmets, and education and safety training materials. We have worked the Safe Routes Walk to School events and Bike to School events, school education events such as Food Lion Family Math nights, Outer Banks Marathon and Expo events, St Patty’s Day Parade, and many local business events throughout the year.
